Maintaining personal care

Do you feel that personal care is becoming increasingly difficult? Perhaps you can still manage brushing your teeth, shaving, doing your hair or skincare. But it takes more energy than it used to. Or you find yourself skipping things because the day already feels full enough. Personal care is about more than just being clean and well-groomed. It’s also about how you feel – about self-confidence, routine and being in control of your day. If you’re finding this harder to manage, it can be upsetting or saddening. Especially if you notice that you’re becoming more dependent on others or can no longer give yourself the attention you’re used to.

Maintaining personal care
What do you notice?

Difficulties with personal care can manifest themselves in many ways. Sometimes it involves practical tasks. Sometimes it is mainly a question of energy, motivation or keeping track of things.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • Brushing your teeth, shaving or doing your hair takes a lot of energy;
  • you delay or skip your treatment;
  • you find it difficult to stand for long periods at the washbasin;
  • you find it harder to carry out small tasks with your hands;
  • you are unable to handle or open your belongings properly;
  • you experience pain when reaching, bending or turning;
  • you pay less attention to your appearance;
  • if you feel uncertain about your care.

Sometimes feelings of shame arise. For example, because you’re afraid that others might notice something. This can mean you’re less likely to have visitors or less keen to go out.

  • Coping with pain, fatigue or limitations whilst managing your own care

    Do you experience pain, do you tire easily, or do you find that your body doesn’t always do what you want it to? If so, everyday self-care tasks can suddenly become very demanding. Taking a shower, getting dressed, preparing a meal or starting your day can then feel like a real struggle. This isn’t just an excuse. These are everyday activities that require a lot of energy and movement. If self-care becomes more difficult, it can affect how you start your day. Perhaps you need to rest first before you can do anything else. Or you might be saving your energy for work, family or appointments, and self-care ends up taking a back seat. In the long run, this can take a heavy toll on you.

  • Daring to ask for help

Was this information helpful?

What could be causing this?

Personal care can become more difficult due to physical ailments, tiredness or reduced strength. Pain in the hands, shoulders, back or neck can also make daily care more difficult. Sometimes balance is an issue, for example if standing at the washbasin feels unsafe.

Mental strain can also play a part. When you are stressed, feeling low, overwhelmed or lacking energy, it can be difficult to keep up with your care routine. Not because you don’t think it’s important, but because it’s simply too much to ask.

In addition, the layout of the bathroom or bedroom can be impractical. Things are too far away, the lighting isn’t good, or there isn’t a comfortable place to sit and do something.

What can you do yourself?

It helps to make personal care simpler and more organised. Small, regular routines can bring a sense of calm.

For example, you could:

  • put care items in a fixed place;
  • only put out what you need on a daily basis;
  • spread care throughout the day;
  • brushing your teeth, shaving or doing your hair whilst sitting down;
  • choose products that are easy to open;
  • use a mirror and good lighting;
  • take some time at a quiet moment of the day;
  • Ask for help with parts that you really can’t get right.

Try to be kind to yourself, too. If you can’t manage everything at once, it may help to decide what’s most important today. Not everything has to be perfect.

When is it advisable to seek help?

It is wise to seek help if personal care is increasingly being neglected or causing you a great deal of stress. Similarly, if you notice that you are going out less, avoiding visits or feeling embarrassed, it is a good idea to discuss this with someone.

Please also seek advice if you experience pain whilst carrying out daily care tasks, are worried about falling, or find you need more and more help. There are often practical solutions that will enable you to continue doing more for yourself.

How Rondom can help

Together, we’ll look at which aspects of personal care are difficult. This isn’t just about what you’re struggling with, but also about what you feel is important to continue doing yourself.

A occupational therapist can help to organise care in a smarter and safer way. Think of aids, a different arrangement of items or spreading tasks throughout the day. If pain, strength or balance are factors, a physiotherapist be appropriate. If you are low on energy, feeling stressed or struggling with your rhythm, a lifestyle coach or psychological support help.

We look for practical solutions that fit in with your everyday life. This gives you more control over your care and your day.

Do you find it difficult to ask for help? Perhaps you think others are already busy enough. Or you don’t want to be a burden to anyone. As a result, many people wait too long, whilst asking for help can actually help you to continue functioning more independently and with greater peace of mind. Asking for help is not the same as giving up. It means you are taking your needs seriously. Sometimes, just a little help is enough to get you through the day better. Yet the barrier can be high, especially if you’re used to doing everything yourself.

  • Difficulty eating and drinking

    Have you noticed that eating or drinking isn’t as easy as it used to be? Perhaps you have a reduced appetite, find eating takes a lot of energy, or struggle to eat or drink enough. Pain, tiredness or other health issues can also affect how and what you eat. Eating and drinking well is important for your health. It provides energy, helps your body recover and supports your day-to-day functioning. If eating or drinking becomes difficult, this can affect your fitness, independence and quality of life.
