Difficulty eating and drinking

Have you noticed that eating or drinking isn’t as easy as it used to be? Perhaps you have a reduced appetite, find eating takes a lot of energy, or struggle to eat or drink enough. Pain, tiredness or other health issues can also affect how and what you eat. Eating and drinking well is important for your health. It provides energy, helps your body recover and supports your day-to-day functioning. If eating or drinking becomes difficult, this can affect your fitness, independence and quality of life.

Difficulty eating and drinking
What do you notice?

Difficulties with eating and drinking can manifest themselves in various ways.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • you have a reduced appetite;
  • you’ll soon feel full;
  • eating takes a lot of energy;
  • you forget to eat or drink;
  • you have difficulty chewing or swallowing;
  • you enjoy your food less;
  • you lose weight;
  • if you feel weak or tired;
  • you drink less than is good for you;
  • eating in company is difficult or tiring.

Sometimes you may find that eating becomes more of a chore than something you enjoy. This can affect your energy levels, mood and health.

What might be the reason for this?

  • Coping with pain, fatigue or limitations whilst managing your own care

    Do you experience pain, do you tire easily, or do you find that your body doesn’t always do what you want it to? If so, everyday self-care tasks can suddenly become very demanding. Taking a shower, getting dressed, preparing a meal or starting your day can then feel like a real struggle. This isn’t just an excuse. These are everyday activities that require a lot of energy and movement. If self-care becomes more difficult, it can affect how you start your day. Perhaps you need to rest first before you can do anything else. Or you might be saving your energy for work, family or appointments, and self-care ends up taking a back seat. In the long run, this can take a heavy toll on you.

  • Daring to ask for help

Was this information helpful?

Difficulties with eating and drinking can have various causes. Physical symptoms such as pain, tiredness, nausea, shortness of breath or problems with chewing and swallowing can make eating more difficult.

Health problems, medication or changes in taste and smell can also affect one’s appetite. This can make it more difficult to eat or drink enough.

In addition, mental and emotional factors may play a role. Stress, low mood, worries or loneliness can cause eating to become less important or less enjoyable.

Sometimes eating simply requires more energy than you have available at that moment. This can make it difficult to get enough nutrients and fluids.

What can you do yourself?

Sometimes even small changes can help to make eating and drinking easier.

For example, you could:

  • eat smaller portions spread throughout the day;
  • choosing fixed times for eating and drinking;
  • always have something to drink within easy reach;
  • choose products that you like;
  • take sufficient time to rest whilst eating;
  • minimise distractions when it is difficult to concentrate;
  • eating together if that feels more sociable or easier;
  • Choose energy-rich foods if you are eating very little;
  • set a reminder to drink.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. Often, it helps simply to see what is feasible for you.

When is it advisable to seek help?

It is wise to seek help if you have been having difficulty eating or drinking for some time. It is also important to seek advice if you are losing weight, not drinking enough or notice that your health is deteriorating.

Do you have difficulty swallowing, do you regularly choke, or does food or drink often get stuck? If so, please contact your GP or treating doctor. Swallowing difficulties can have various causes and always require attention.

Please also ask for help if eating takes a lot of energy or if this prevents you from taking part in daily activities.

How Rondom can help

A occupational therapist can help if eating and drinking take a lot of energy or are difficult to fit into your day. Together, you’ll look at practical solutions, a manageable daily routine and ways to better tailor activities to your capacity. The occupational therapist can also advise on aids that make eating and drinking easier. If you have problems with chewing or swallowing, a speech and language therapist can offer support. If fatigue, pain or other health issues play a major role, we will work together to determine which support is most suitable.

Our aim is to ensure that food and drink once again meet your needs and reflect what is important to you as closely as possible.

Do you find it difficult to ask for help? Perhaps you think others are already busy enough. Or you don’t want to be a burden to anyone. As a result, many people wait too long, whilst asking for help can actually help you to continue functioning more independently and with greater peace of mind. Asking for help is not the same as giving up. It means you are taking your needs seriously. Sometimes, just a little help is enough to get you through the day better. Yet the barrier can be high, especially if you’re used to doing everything yourself.

  • Difficulty getting dressed

    Have you noticed that getting dressed is taking more and more time or energy? Perhaps you’re finding it difficult to fasten buttons or put on your socks properly. Sometimes moving can be painful when changing clothes. You may also find yourself choosing comfortable clothes more often, because other clothes have become too difficult to manage. Getting dressed may seem like a simple task, but there is a lot involved. You need to be able to bend down, reach, turn, keep your balance and make small movements with your hands. If you find this increasingly difficult, getting dressed can become frustrating – especially if you want to remain independent and don’t want to have to ask for help all the time.
