Preparing for the future with permanent disabilities
Have you been told that certain limitations are likely to remain? Or have you noticed yourself that your health is no longer what it used to be? This can stir up a range of emotions: sadness, uncertainty, anger or fear of what lies ahead. At the same time, it can help to prepare for the future step by step. Preparing for the future does not mean giving up. It means looking ahead and making choices that make your life easier, safer and more manageable. Especially when limitations remain, it is important to stay in control.

What do you notice?
Long-term disabilities can affect many aspects of your life.
You may, for example, notice that:
- you are worried about the future;
- daily tasks continue to take more effort;
- you are unsure about work, housing or transport;
- you need help, but are finding it difficult to do so;
- you are afraid of losing your independence;
- you feel sad about what is no longer possible;
- you put off practical matters;
- if you are unsure which changes are required;
- you find it difficult to make choices.
Sometimes it is too much to take in all at once. In that case, it helps to look at each part individually to see what needs attention at the moment.
