Systemic therapy
Systemic therapy is a treatment method in which we focus not only on the person seeking help or experiencing symptoms, but also on the people and relationships around them. The way you and the people around you interact, communicate and respond to events can affect your day-to-day functioning.
In systemic therapy, we work together to explore which patterns and interactions are at play and how these contribute to the situation at hand. This may involve focusing on the family, the relationship with a partner, relatives, friends or other significant people in the person’s life.

When can systemic therapy help?
Systemic therapy can help when your symptoms affect not only yourself but also the people around you. Systemic therapy can also be useful when relationships and mutual patterns play a role in causing or perpetuating problems.
Systemic therapy may, for example, be suitable for:
- tensions within the family;
- relationship problems;
- changes within the family or the living environment;
- recurring conflicts or misunderstandings;
- significant events that affect several people involved;
- parenting questions;
- situations where greater understanding and coordination are required.
How does systemic therapy work?
During the sessions, we look at how people influence one another and what patterns emerge in relationships. Depending on the nature of the support required, sessions may take place with you alone, together with loved ones, or in varying group configurations.
With systemic therapy, you will work on, amongst other things:
- gaining an understanding of patterns and interactions;
- strengthening communication;
- a better understanding of each other’s perspectives;
- examining roles and expectations;
- developing new ways of interacting with one another;
- strengthening support and cooperation within the system.
In systemic therapy, we only involve others when it is appropriate and desirable. Together, we explore what kind of involvement is helpful and how relationships can contribute to lasting change.
Together, we will look at which approach best suits your needs and what you require.
