Maintaining a work-life balance

Do you find that your work and private life are constantly overlapping? Perhaps work takes up a lot of your time, whilst home life also demands a lot from you. Or perhaps you try to do everything well, but find that there is little time left for yourself. Maintaining a balance isn’t always easy, especially when pressure comes from all sides. Maintaining a balance between work and private life does not mean that everything is always divided equally. Sometimes work demands more. Sometimes home life demands more. The important thing is that you do not find yourself permanently lacking in rest, attention and energy.

Work-life balance
What do you notice?

An imbalance can manifest itself in many ways.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • you have little energy left at home;
  • you are not letting go of your work properly;
  • you have less time for relaxation;
  • you are irritable towards those around you;
  • you have trouble sleeping;
  • you feel you have little space for yourself;
  • you cancel appointments because you are too tired;
  • if you feel you are falling short in every respect;
  • you are always playing catch-up.

Sometimes you only realise how out of balance things are when your symptoms get worse or when you can no longer really enjoy anything.

What might be the reason for this?

  • Adapting the workplace

    Do you find that your workplace isn’t quite right for you? Perhaps you’re experiencing discomfort caused by your chair, desk, screen, work height or the way you have to move. Or perhaps you find that by the end of the day you feel stiff, tired or tense. A workplace doesn’t have to be perfect, but it does need to suit your body’s needs. A good workplace helps to reduce discomfort and distribute energy more effectively. This applies not only to office work. The workplace can also have a significant impact on standing work, care work, production work, retail work or work whilst on the move.

  • Always on

Was this information helpful?

Work-life balance can be disrupted by high work pressure, care responsibilities, family commitments, informal care, financial worries or health issues. Digital accessibility also makes it easier to take work home with you.

In addition, expectations can play a part. You want to be a good employee, parent, partner or carer. This can mean that you put yourself last.

If there is no recovery, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep everything going.

What can you do yourself?

It helps you to choose more clearly where to focus your energy.

For example, you could:

  • review your week in terms of exertion and recovery;
  • set aside specific times for rest;
  • keep work and private life as separate as possible;
  • distribute tasks at home;
  • setting limits on accessibility;
  • discuss what can be scaled back temporarily;
  • deliberately setting aside time for yourself;
  • accept that not everything can be done at once.

Balance requires making choices. That can be difficult, but it helps you to continue functioning healthily.

When is it advisable to seek help?

It is wise to seek help if you persistently feel that you are not coping. Advice is also useful if you are recovering poorly, are often tired or are experiencing problems due to the combination of work and private life.

Please also ask for help if you are unsure which choices to make or if you are finding it difficult to discuss boundaries.

How Rondom can help

Together, we’ll look at your week, your tasks and your recovery. In doing so, we’ll focus on work, home, energy levels, boundaries and what matters to you.

A occupational therapist can help with energy balance and the division of tasks. A lifestyle coach can help with rhythm, sleep and recovery. In cases of stress, feelings of guilt or worrying, it can psychological support should be appropriate.

We are looking for a balance that is achievable and suits your lifestyle.

Do you feel as though you’re always on the go? Perhaps you’re constantly busy with work, family, appointments or everything that still needs doing. Even when you’re sitting still, your mind keeps racing. That can be exhausting. It’s as if your body is at home, but your mind isn’t really there. Being constantly on the go can seem normal for a long time. Especially if you have a lot of responsibilities. But if there are few moments of rest, your system becomes overloaded. You may then experience symptoms such as headaches, tiredness, tension, poor sleep or irritability.

  • Carrying on with work despite pain or tiredness

    Do you find that work is becoming increasingly difficult due to pain or fatigue? Perhaps you manage to get through the working day, but afterwards you feel completely drained. Or you find yourself carrying on at work, even though your body is actually already telling you that it’s had enough. In the long run, this can take a heavy toll on you. Carrying on working whilst experiencing symptoms is often a matter of striking a balance. You want to do your job well, not put a strain on your colleagues and fulfil your responsibilities. At the same time, your body or mind may need more rest than you’re used to. If that balance is missing, work can start to feel more and more like a struggle for survival.
