Combining study with health issues or care at home

Are you finding that studying is becoming difficult due to health issues or caring responsibilities at home? Perhaps you’d like to keep up, but lectures, assignments, travel time and responsibilities at home are taking up a lot of your energy. Or you may feel under pressure because others seem to be carrying on as normal, whilst you’re constantly having to work out what’s feasible. Studying requires concentration, planning and perseverance. When pain, tiredness, stress or caring for someone at home are added to the mix, it’s easy to lose your balance. It’s important not to wait until you’re completely stuck.

Studying whilst unwell or receiving care at home
What do you notice?

Balancing your studies with health issues or care at home can be challenging in various ways.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • you find it difficult to concentrate;
  • tasks are left undone;
  • you miss lectures due to health issues or care responsibilities;
  • you have little time to recover;
  • you fall behind and consequently become stressed;
  • you feel guilty towards school or at home;
  • you take part in fewer social activities;
  • you are having trouble sleeping due to stress or worries;
  • You are unsure whether you can see the course through to the end.

Sometimes you can keep up appearances for the outside world for a long time. But on the inside, it can feel as though you’re constantly playing catch-up.

What could be causing this?

  • Adapting the workplace

    Do you find that your workplace isn’t quite right for you? Perhaps you’re experiencing discomfort caused by your chair, desk, screen, work height or the way you have to move. Or perhaps you find that by the end of the day you feel stiff, tired or tense. A workplace doesn’t have to be perfect, but it does need to suit your body’s needs. A good workplace helps to reduce discomfort and distribute energy more effectively. This applies not only to office work. The workplace can also have a significant impact on standing work, care work, production work, retail work or work whilst on the move.

  • Always on

Was this information helpful?

Studying requires a great deal of mental energy. Planning, reading, listening, learning and performing all take their toll. When you are in pain, tired or stressed, that energy is often limited.

Care responsibilities at home can place an extra burden on you. You are then not just a student, but also someone who contributes ideas, helps out, organises things or provides emotional support. This can have a significant impact on your day.

Uncertainty about the options available within a school or course can also cause stress. Often, adjustments are possible, but you may not know where to start.

What can you do yourself?

It helps to get an overview early on and organise support.

For example, you could:

  • planning your week realistically;
  • choose fixed study times;
  • planning time to rest after busy periods;
  • break large tasks down into small steps;
  • discuss what is possible with the school or educational institution;
  • asking for help with care tasks at home;
  • make your boundaries clear;
  • set priorities each week.

Don’t try to sort everything out on your own. Studying whilst dealing with health issues or caring responsibilities often requires clear arrangements.

When is it advisable to seek help?

It is wise to seek help if you are falling behind, constantly pushing yourself beyond your limits or no longer recovering properly. It is also a good idea to seek advice if you are unsure whether you can keep up with your studies.

Please also seek help if you’re feeling guilty or are caught between school and home. It is precisely at times like these that support can help you make choices and regain a sense of control.

How Rondom can help

Together, we’ll look at what makes studying difficult and how you can achieve a better balance. In doing so, we’ll focus on energy, planning, recovery, care responsibilities and concentration.

A occupational therapist can help with planning, energy management and the allocation of tasks. A lifestyle coach can help with rhythm, sleep and recovery. In cases of stress, worries or mental pressure, it can psychological support should be appropriate.

We are looking for an approach that better suits your workload and home situation.

Do you feel as though you’re always on the go? Perhaps you’re constantly busy with work, family, appointments or everything that still needs doing. Even when you’re sitting still, your mind keeps racing. That can be exhausting. It’s as if your body is at home, but your mind isn’t really there. Being constantly on the go can seem normal for a long time. Especially if you have a lot of responsibilities. But if there are few moments of rest, your system becomes overloaded. You may then experience symptoms such as headaches, tiredness, tension, poor sleep or irritability.

  • Carrying on with work despite pain or tiredness

    Do you find that work is becoming increasingly difficult due to pain or fatigue? Perhaps you manage to get through the working day, but afterwards you feel completely drained. Or you find yourself carrying on at work, even though your body is actually already telling you that it’s had enough. In the long run, this can take a heavy toll on you. Carrying on working whilst experiencing symptoms is often a matter of striking a balance. You want to do your job well, not put a strain on your colleagues and fulfil your responsibilities. At the same time, your body or mind may need more rest than you’re used to. If that balance is missing, work can start to feel more and more like a struggle for survival.
