Recognising the signs of stress

Are you wondering whether your symptoms might be caused by stress? Perhaps you feel tired, tense or more easily irritated. Or you may find that your mind is racing and your body is struggling to relax. Stress is sometimes a part of life. But if tension persists for too long, it can lead to symptoms. It is important to recognise stress. Not to label yourself, but so that you can take action sooner. The sooner you notice the signs, the greater the chance that you can prevent your symptoms from getting worse.

What do you notice?

Stress can manifest itself physically, mentally and behaviourally.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • you have tense muscles;
  • you have trouble sleeping;
  • you worry a lot;
  • you get angry or emotional more quickly;
  • you have difficulty concentrating;
  • you have a headache or stomach ache;
  • you have little patience;
  • you eat more or less than usual;
  • you find it less enjoyable.

Sometimes you notice stress mainly through small changes. You may be curt, forget things or feel rushed for no obvious reason.

What might be the reason for this?

Stress arises when, over a prolonged period, more is demanded of you than you can cope with. This may be due to demands from work, study, family, financial worries or health issues.

Uncertainty or a lack of control can also cause stress. If you do not know where you stand, your body remains on alert.

Stress isn’t just something in your head. Your body reacts to it too. That’s why you may feel tension in your muscles, in your breathing, in your sleep or in your energy levels.

What can you do yourself?

It helps to take your stress signals seriously and not to wait until you reach a dead end.

For example, you could:

  • write it down when tension rises;
  • ensuring regular rest periods;
  • to move gently;
  • seek out fewer stimuli when your mind is full;
  • talk to someone you trust;
  • make tasks smaller;
  • set limits on what you do in a day;
  • ask for help in good time.

Pay particular attention to patterns. When do symptoms worsen? And what helps with recovery?

When is it advisable to seek help?

It is wise to seek help if symptoms of stress persist or affect your work, sleep, relationships or daily tasks. It is also a good idea to seek advice if you feel as though you are constantly on edge.

Be sure to seek help if you are feeling panicked, unable to recover from anything, or afraid of losing control.

How Rondom can help

Together, we’ll look at which symptoms apply to you and what causes your stress levels to rise. In doing so, we’ll focus on your daily routine, recovery, boundaries, sleep and mental strain.

A lifestyle coach can help with rhythm, relaxation and healthy habits. A occupational therapist can help with energy balance and task allocation. If you find yourself worrying, feeling stressed or getting stuck, psychological support should be appropriate.

We are looking for ways to recognise stress earlier and manage it more effectively.

  • Adapting the workplace

    Do you find that your workplace isn’t quite right for you? Perhaps you’re experiencing discomfort caused by your chair, desk, screen, work height or the way you have to move. Or perhaps you find that by the end of the day you feel stiff, tired or tense. A workplace doesn’t have to be perfect, but it does need to suit your body’s needs. A good workplace helps to reduce discomfort and distribute energy more effectively. This applies not only to office work. The workplace can also have a significant impact on standing work, care work, production work, retail work or work whilst on the move.

  • Always on

Was this information helpful?

Do you feel as though you’re always on the go? Perhaps you’re constantly busy with work, family, appointments or everything that still needs doing. Even when you’re sitting still, your mind keeps racing. That can be exhausting. It’s as if your body is at home, but your mind isn’t really there. Being constantly on the go can seem normal for a long time. Especially if you have a lot of responsibilities. But if there are few moments of rest, your system becomes overloaded. You may then experience symptoms such as headaches, tiredness, tension, poor sleep or irritability.

  • Carrying on with work despite pain or tiredness

    Do you find that work is becoming increasingly difficult due to pain or fatigue? Perhaps you manage to get through the working day, but afterwards you feel completely drained. Or you find yourself carrying on at work, even though your body is actually already telling you that it’s had enough. In the long run, this can take a heavy toll on you. Carrying on working whilst experiencing symptoms is often a matter of striking a balance. You want to do your job well, not put a strain on your colleagues and fulfil your responsibilities. At the same time, your body or mind may need more rest than you’re used to. If that balance is missing, work can start to feel more and more like a struggle for survival.
