Spreading your energy throughout the day or week

Do you find that your energy runs out quickly? Perhaps you start the day well, but by halfway through you’re already exhausted. Or on a good day you do too much and then need a long time to recover. Managing your energy is tricky when your capacity varies. Yet managing it better can make a big difference. Energy isn’t just needed for major tasks. Even showering, travelling, talking, working, thinking and dealing with stimuli take up energy. If you don’t take this into account, you’ll become overloaded more quickly.

Distributing energy
What do you notice?

Struggling to manage your energy can become a pattern.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • you experience peaks and troughs in your energy levels;
  • you need time to recover after busy days;
  • you postpone tasks until you have no other choice;
  • you do too much on good days;
  • you have little energy left for fun things;
  • you find it difficult to plan;
  • you become irritable when you are tired;
  • you take a rest when it is actually already too late;
  • you start to feel unsure about what you can cope with.

Sometimes it feels as though your energy levels are unpredictable. Yet there are often patterns to be discovered.

What might be the reason for this?

  • Adapting the workplace

    Do you find that your workplace isn’t quite right for you? Perhaps you’re experiencing discomfort caused by your chair, desk, screen, work height or the way you have to move. Or perhaps you find that by the end of the day you feel stiff, tired or tense. A workplace doesn’t have to be perfect, but it does need to suit your body’s needs. A good workplace helps to reduce discomfort and distribute energy more effectively. This applies not only to office work. The workplace can also have a significant impact on standing work, care work, production work, retail work or work whilst on the move.

  • Always on

Was this information helpful?

Managing your energy can be difficult due to pain, tiredness, stress, poor sleep or recovery from illness. Mental tasks can also take a lot of energy, such as concentrating, planning or socialising.

Habits also play a part. Many people are used to carrying on until something is finished. When one’s capacity is reduced, this often no longer works well.

A busy schedule without any time to recover also means that energy is used up more quickly.

What can you do yourself?

It helps to think of your energy as something you can spread out over the day.

For example, you could:

  • keep track of which tasks take a lot of energy;
  • spread heavy tasks throughout the week;
  • rest plans before and after exercise;
  • don’t fill up the good days completely;
  • alternating between physical and mental tasks;
  • choose what really matters today;
  • ask for help with tasks that take a lot of energy;
  • schedule fixed recovery times.

Try not to see rest as something you’re only allowed to do once everything is finished. In fact, rest helps you to keep going for longer.

When is it advisable to seek help?

It is wise to seek help if your energy levels feel unpredictable or if you frequently push yourself beyond your limits. It is also a good idea to seek advice if you need a long time to recover after carrying out everyday tasks.

Please also ask for help if you are unsure how to organise your day or week differently.

How Rondom can help

Together, we’ll look at how your energy is distributed throughout the day and week. In doing so, we’ll focus on tasks, recovery, sleep, symptoms and stimuli.

A occupational therapist can help with energy management and creating a workable daily routine. A lifestyle coach can help with sleep, rhythm and recovery. In cases of stress or mental strain, it can psychological support should be appropriate.

We are looking for a distribution that better suits your capacity.

Do you feel as though you’re always on the go? Perhaps you’re constantly busy with work, family, appointments or everything that still needs doing. Even when you’re sitting still, your mind keeps racing. That can be exhausting. It’s as if your body is at home, but your mind isn’t really there. Being constantly on the go can seem normal for a long time. Especially if you have a lot of responsibilities. But if there are few moments of rest, your system becomes overloaded. You may then experience symptoms such as headaches, tiredness, tension, poor sleep or irritability.

  • Carrying on with work despite pain or tiredness

    Do you find that work is becoming increasingly difficult due to pain or fatigue? Perhaps you manage to get through the working day, but afterwards you feel completely drained. Or you find yourself carrying on at work, even though your body is actually already telling you that it’s had enough. In the long run, this can take a heavy toll on you. Carrying on working whilst experiencing symptoms is often a matter of striking a balance. You want to do your job well, not put a strain on your colleagues and fulfil your responsibilities. At the same time, your body or mind may need more rest than you’re used to. If that balance is missing, work can start to feel more and more like a struggle for survival.
