Staying safe when out and about

Does getting out and about outdoors feel less safe than it used to? Perhaps you find pavements, heavy traffic, slippery surfaces, kerbs or unexpected situations stressful. Outdoors, the environment is less predictable than at home. This can make you feel uncertain, especially if you are in pain, tire more easily or are afraid of falling. Moving about safely outdoors is important for maintaining your independence. It helps you to do your shopping, visit people, get some exercise and take part in activities. If going outdoors becomes stressful, your world can quickly become smaller.

Staying safe when moving about outdoors
What do you notice?

Uncertainty about going outdoors can have a significant impact on what you choose to do.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • you avoid uneven pavements;
  • if you are worried about slippery conditions;
  • if you find busy places difficult;
  • you get tired more quickly whilst walking;
  • you don’t like going out on your own;
  • you choose routes with benches or rest stops;
  • you trip or nearly fall;
  • you have difficulty crossing the road;
  • you cancel your activities because of the journey involved.

Sometimes you only go to places you know. That can feel safe, but it can also become limiting.

What might be the reason for this?

  • Avoiding family visits or social engagements

    Do you find yourself cancelling family visits or social engagements more often than you’d actually like? Perhaps you look forward to an engagement at first, but on the day itself you find yourself dreading it. You wonder whether you’ll be able to cope, whether there’ll be enough rest, and whether others understand what you need. This can cause a great deal of stress. Social engagements often require more than just being present. You have to travel, talk, process sensory input, sometimes sit or stand for long periods, and then recover afterwards. This can be too much. Avoiding such situations may feel safe in the short term, but in the long run it can mean you miss out on social contact and enjoyment.

  • Cycling

Was this information helpful?

Being active outdoors requires balance, strength, vision, concentration and responsiveness. Pain, tiredness, foot problems, dizziness or a lack of fitness can make this more difficult.

The surroundings also play a part. Think of loose paving slabs, wet leaves, heavy traffic, bicycles, dogs, poor lighting or a lack of places to rest.

In addition, a fear of falling can cause you to move more stiffly. This makes it more difficult to react to unexpected situations.

What can you do yourself?

It helps to build safety and confidence in outdoor exercise step by step.

For example, you could:

  • choose routes that you are familiar with;
  • wear sturdy shoes;
  • getting some exercise outdoors during quiet moments;
  • to use a tool if it provides support;
  • take your phone with you;
  • avoid slippery or busy areas;
  • choosing places to rest along the way;
  • Take extra care in bad weather.

Keep moving within your own limits. Avoiding exercise altogether can cause your confidence in exercise and your fitness levels to decline further.

When is it advisable to seek help?

It is wise to seek help if you often feel unsafe when you are out and about, or if you have nearly fallen. Advice is also important if you go out less often because of fear or uncertainty.

Please contact us if you experience dizziness, fainting, sudden loss of consciousness or if you fall frequently.

How Rondom can help

Together, we’ll look at what makes outdoor exercise unsafe. In doing so, we’ll focus on balance, strength, gait, footwear, aids, energy levels and the environment.

A occupational therapist can provide support with routes, aids and practical safety outdoors. A physiotherapist can help with balance, strength and confidence in movement A podiatrist can offer advice on foot problems, shoes and stability.

We are looking for ways to go outside again more safely and with greater confidence.

Have you noticed that cycling isn’t as easy as it used to be? Perhaps you feel unsteady when getting on your bike, experience pain whilst cycling, or feel anxious in traffic. Cycling offers a great deal of freedom. You can go where you like, get some exercise outdoors and are less dependent on others. If cycling becomes more difficult, it can have a significant impact on your daily life. Cycling requires balance, strength, reaction time, situational awareness and confidence. The bike itself must also fit you properly. If any one of these things changes, cycling can become stressful or difficult.

  • Daring to go outside

    Do you find going outside a bit daunting? Perhaps you’re worried about falling, experiencing symptoms, losing your bearings or panicking. Or you may feel insecure because you’ve lost confidence in your body. Going outside may seem simple, but it can be a big step if you feel vulnerable. Being outdoors is important for exercise, social interaction, daylight and independence. If you’re less willing to go outside, your world can quickly become smaller. It’s important to take this seriously and see, step by step, what helps.
