Driving

Do you find that driving feels less enjoyable or safe? Perhaps you have difficulty sitting for long periods, looking over your shoulder, getting in and out of the car, or reacting in heavy traffic. Driving gives you a great deal of independence. If this becomes a source of uncertainty, it can affect your work, appointments, family visits and going out. Driving requires attention, movement, strength, reaction times and situational awareness. Health issues can get in the way of this. It is important to take an honest look at what is still safe and feasible.

Driving
What do you notice?

Difficulties with driving can become apparent at various times.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • sitting for long periods causes pain;
  • getting in and out of the car is difficult;
  • it is difficult to look over your shoulder when parking or merging;
  • you get tired more quickly whilst driving;
  • heavy traffic causes stress;
  • you find it harder to concentrate;
  • you avoid driving;
  • you experience pain in your back, neck, shoulders, hips or legs;
  • you are unsure of your ability to react.

Sometimes you may find yourself only driving short or familiar routes. Whilst this may help in the short term, it can also restrict your freedom.

What might be the reason for this?

  • Avoiding family visits or social engagements

    Do you find yourself cancelling family visits or social engagements more often than you’d actually like? Perhaps you look forward to an engagement at first, but on the day itself you find yourself dreading it. You wonder whether you’ll be able to cope, whether there’ll be enough rest, and whether others understand what you need. This can cause a great deal of stress. Social engagements often require more than just being present. You have to travel, talk, process sensory input, sometimes sit or stand for long periods, and then recover afterwards. This can be too much. Avoiding such situations may feel safe in the short term, but in the long run it can mean you miss out on social contact and enjoyment.

  • Cycling

Was this information helpful?

Driving can become more difficult due to pain, stiffness, tiredness, concentration problems or tension. Problems with the neck, back, shoulders, hands, hips, knees or feet can also have an impact.

In addition, medication can affect your ability to drive. Some medicines can make you drowsy or slow your reaction time. It is important to always check this with your doctor or pharmacist.

Heavy traffic, driving in the dark, unfamiliar routes or stress and anxiety on the road can also make driving feel less straightforward.

What can you do yourself?

It helps you to organise your driving in a mindful and safe way.

For example, you could:

  • planning short journeys;
  • take breaks on longer journeys;
  • adjust your chair and mirrors properly;
  • avoid busy times;
  • check the route in advance;
  • Do not drive if you are very tired;
  • to check whether medication affects driving;
  • Ask for help if getting in and out of the car is difficult.

Safety comes first. Driving must not only be physically possible, but must also feel safe.

When is it advisable to seek help?

It is wise to seek help if you have any doubts about your safety whilst driving. It is also important to seek advice if you experience pain, tiredness, dizziness, difficulty concentrating or anxiety.

Please contact us if you are unsure whether you can drive safely due to any symptoms or medication. If you have obvious problems with your vision, reaction times or consciousness, it is not advisable to drive until this has been discussed.

How Rondom can help

Together, we’ll look at which aspects of driving are difficult. In doing so, we’ll focus on posture, movement, energy levels, getting in and out of the car, and recovery.

A occupational therapist can help come up with practical adjustments, get in and out of the car safely, and cope with stress. A physiotherapist can help with posture, mobility and strength. A podiatrist can provide support if foot problems or footwear affect the use of pedals. In the event of persistent anxiety, psychological support should be appropriate.

Together, we look for practical solutions, with safety as our guiding principle.

Have you noticed that cycling isn’t as easy as it used to be? Perhaps you feel unsteady when getting on your bike, experience pain whilst cycling, or feel anxious in traffic. Cycling offers a great deal of freedom. You can go where you like, get some exercise outdoors and are less dependent on others. If cycling becomes more difficult, it can have a significant impact on your daily life. Cycling requires balance, strength, reaction time, situational awareness and confidence. The bike itself must also fit you properly. If any one of these things changes, cycling can become stressful or difficult.

  • Daring to go outside

    Do you find going outside a bit daunting? Perhaps you’re worried about falling, experiencing symptoms, losing your bearings or panicking. Or you may feel insecure because you’ve lost confidence in your body. Going outside may seem simple, but it can be a big step if you feel vulnerable. Being outdoors is important for exercise, social interaction, daylight and independence. If you’re less willing to go outside, your world can quickly become smaller. It’s important to take this seriously and see, step by step, what helps.
