Podiatry is a (para)medical discipline that focuses on the treatment and prevention of physical complaints in the lower parts of the body. This includes pain in the feet, but podiatrists also treat complaints in the knees, hips or lower back.

What is a podiatrist?
A podiatrist at Rondom Podotherapeuten specialises in foot problems and issues arising from posture and movement. Our podiatrists carry out a thorough assessment and devise a suitable solution. This may be a bespoke podiatric insole, or it could be an orthosis or taping. Our podiatrists also treat people with rheumatism or diabetes, sportspeople, those in physically demanding jobs and children with foot problems. In the Netherlands, podiatry has been a legally recognised paramedical profession since 1982. ‘Podiatrist’ is a legally protected title, which may only be used by someone who has completed a bachelor’s degree in podiatry at a university of applied sciences.

When should you see a podiatrist?
People can see a podiatrist for more than just foot problems. If you are experiencing problems with your toes, nails, ankles, knees, hips or back, a visit to the podiatrist is a good idea. The podiatrist treats complaints arising from the malfunctioning of the feet and/or legs, an abnormal foot position or an incorrect gait. This, in turn, can lead to other complaints in different parts of the body, such as strain on a muscle or joint.
First visit to the podiatrist
The first time you visit a podiatrist, an examination will be carried out to determine the cause of your symptoms, using clinical expertise and, where necessary, the latest high-tech equipment, such as pressure measurement plates or ultrasound. Based on the information obtained, the podiatrist will propose a course of treatment, which can be started following consultation with you.
