Wear and tear of the midtarsal joints
This is also known as: arthritis/arthrosis. In arthritis/arthrosis of the midtarsal joints (metatarsal bones), the quality of the cartilage deteriorates; it becomes thinner and softer. This leads to deformation of the bone directly beneath the cartilage. Visible and palpable lumps, also known as osteophytes, form at the edge of the joint. These lumps restrict the mobility of the metatarsals. Nerves may also become pinched, causing pain, sensory disturbances and loss of strength.
It hurts around the metatarsal bones; this can be on either the inside or the outside of the foot.
Treatment for foot strain involves the use of pressure-relieving podiatric insoles. You will often be treated by both the podiatrist and the physiotherapist and/or manual therapist. Once the joint is damaged, this cannot be reversed.
The expected outcome in terms of pain relief is good, although the preservation of function is fair to good. If orthotics are made for you, please bear in mind that these are often permanent.
