Other pain in the metatarsals
All muscles have tendons that can become irritated due to incorrect strain and/or trauma.
Depending on the affected muscle that attaches to the metatarsals, symptoms may occur. This may cause redness and/or swelling; sometimes the attachment site may feel warmer to the touch.
Treatment involves addressing the underlying cause. Treatment is often only provided if the cause lies in an abnormal position and/or function of the foot. Corrective podiatric insoles are made for this purpose. In the acute phase, taping may be used as a form of therapy.
The expected outcome depends on the muscle affected; the patient may be free of symptoms.
