Tilting the foot outwards whilst walking
Supination upon heel strike/supinated gait
What is it?
Supination refers to the outward tilting of the outer side of the ankle or midfoot, causing the arch of the foot to rise. This movement occurs as the foot rolls forward whilst walking. The opposite of supination is pronation.
The absence of pronation and/or the presence of a supination movement can cause a variety of symptoms due to a lack of cushioning, particularly on the outside of the legs and feet. Walking entirely on the outside of the feet during the rolling-off phase (supinated walking) can also cause such symptoms.
A treatment
The treatment consists of podiatric insoles to correct foot function. Advice on footwear will also be provided. Foot muscle-strengthening exercises are particularly beneficial for children.
The expected outcome is a reduction in symptoms, leading to a symptom-free state.
