Bony protrusion at the back of the heel bone
You may notice that the back of your heel becomes sensitive when wearing shoes. Or that a hard edge keeps pressing against the same spot. Sometimes this causes a painful or irritated area, making walking, exercising or standing for long periods uncomfortable.
Many people find that certain shoes are less comfortable or that they start to avoid wearing shoes because of the pressure on the heel.
A bony protrusion at the back of the heel bone is often referred to as Haglund’s exostosis. Not every bony protrusion causes symptoms. Symptoms mainly arise when there is friction against the shoe or when the bursa or Achilles tendon becomes irritated.

What is it?
A bone spur is an extra growth of bone at the back of the heel bone. The spur is usually located close to the attachment of the Achilles tendon.
Due to the shape of the heel bone, increased pressure may be exerted on the skin, the bursa and the Achilles tendon. This can cause pain and swelling.
