What is iliotibial tract friction syndrome?
Iliotibial band friction syndrome is an injury that is common amongst runners and walkers. It is the most common cause of pain on the outside of the knee.
The iliotibial tract serves to provide stability to the outer side of the knee. When the knee bends, the position of the iliotibial tract shifts slightly backwards. When the knee straightens again, it snaps back forwards. This movement is usually responsible for irritation and inflammation of the iliotibial tract and bursitis.
Causes of iliotibial band friction syndrome
Iliotibial band friction syndrome is often caused by overuse of the knee, for example whilst running or walking. This overuse can be caused by, amongst other things:
Symptoms of iliotibial band friction syndrome
The pain is usually localised on the outside of the knee. The pain can range from a dull ache to a sharp, stabbing pain. The bursa (near the hip) may also be painful when walking or when local pressure is applied, for example, by lying on it.
Iliotibial tract friction syndrome or runner’s knee?
Iliotibial tract friction syndrome is often confused with the runner’s knee or cyclist’s knee. Although both are common among runners, they are in fact different injuries. With iliotibial band friction syndrome, pain is felt on the outside of the knee, whilst with runner’s knee, pain is felt on the front of the knee.
