Nerve entrapment in the calf
You may notice a tingling, burning or numb sensation on the outside of your lower leg, on the instep or towards your toes. Sometimes it feels as though small electric shocks are running through your leg, or as though certain areas have reduced sensation.
These symptoms can occur when a nerve in the lower leg is put under pressure. Nerve pain often feels different from muscle pain and can vary whilst walking, moving or standing for long periods.
What is it?
A pinched nerve occurs when there is too much pressure or tension on a nerve. An important nerve runs through the calf and around the outside of the knee, providing sensation and movement to the foot.
If this nerve becomes irritated, symptoms may arise. Particularly in the lower leg, the instep and the toes. Sometimes, a pinched nerve in the calf can also affect the strength of the foot or the ability to lift it.
