Difficulty with cleaning and tidying up

Do you find that cleaning and tidying up are increasingly being left undone? Perhaps you do want to do them. But you are unable to because of pain, tiredness or a lack of organisation. Or you start something and realise halfway through that you’ve run out of energy. This can cause anxiety, especially if you want to feel comfortable in your own home. A clean and tidy home is important to many people. Not because everything has to be perfect, but because a pleasant environment brings a sense of calm. If housework becomes too much of a burden, it can affect your daily life. You might feel embarrassed about having visitors or feel as though you’re constantly playing catch-up.

Difficulty with cleaning and tidying up
What do you notice?

Cleaning and tidying can be tricky in many ways. Sometimes the tasks are physically demanding. Sometimes it’s difficult to get started or to keep track of everything.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • if vacuuming or mopping is too strenuous;
  • bending, reaching or lifting causes pain;
  • you get tired quickly whilst doing household chores;
  • ‘opruimen’ remains untranslated;
  • you don’t know where to start;
  • you put off tasks because they feel too big;
  • if you experience symptoms after cleaning;
  • you avoid visiting because you feel ashamed;
  • Your home becomes less safe because of things on the floor.

Sometimes, on good days, you try to catch up on everything. That might seem handy, but it can mean you then need days to recover.

What could be the reason for this?

  • Adapting the home to accommodate health issues

    Have you noticed that your home no longer meets your needs? Perhaps the stairs have become a struggle, the bathroom feels unsafe, or thresholds and narrow passageways are causing difficulties. This can make you feel insecure. Your home should, in fact, be a place where you can move about freely and safely. Home adaptations do not always have to be major. Sometimes it is just a small change, such as better lighting, a handrail or a different layout. Sometimes more is needed. The most important thing is that your home suits your daily life and the things you want to continue doing yourself.

  • Afraid of falling

Was this information helpful?

Cleaning and tidying up place a lot of strain on your body. You walk, bend down, turn, lift and reach. If you experience pain, stiffness, tiredness or a loss of strength, this can be quite a challenge.

Mental strain also plays a part. If your mind is full, tidying up can feel overwhelming. You may well see what needs to be done, but find it hard to take action. Stress, low mood or sensory overload can make this worse.

In addition, the way in which tasks are divided up may no longer be appropriate. What used to be manageable in a single morning may now require a more spread-out approach or additional help.

What can you do yourself?

It helps to break cleaning and tidying down into smaller tasks. You don’t have to do everything at once.

For example, you could:

  • Choose one small task at a time;
  • scheduling fixed times for recurring tasks;
  • spread heavy tasks over several days;
  • finding a permanent place for things;
  • using aids with a long handle;
  • working whilst seated wherever possible;
  • taking breaks in between;
  • ask for help with heavy tasks such as mopping or washing windows.

Above all, try to avoid constantly pushing yourself beyond your limits. Doing a little at a time and saving some energy often works better than trying to finish everything in one go.

When is it advisable to seek help?

It is wise to seek help if you are consistently unable to clean or tidy up. It is also a good idea to seek advice if your home becomes unsafe, for example due to items on the floor or a lack of space to walk.

Please also seek help if you feel embarrassed, avoid visiting others or experience a great deal of stress due to housework. Housework doesn’t have to be perfect, but your home must remain safe and liveable.

How Rondom can help

Together, we’ll look at which household tasks are difficult and why. In doing so, we’ll take into account your energy levels, your movements, your daily routine and the layout of your home.

A occupational therapist can help to organise tasks more effectively and find practical solutions. Think of aids, a different order of tasks or adapting the environment. If pain, strength or fitness are major factors, a physiotherapist help. If you are experiencing stress, feeling overwhelmed or struggling to keep track of things, you can psychological support that is appropriate.

We are looking for an approach that will ensure your home remains liveable without costing you too much.

Are you worried about falling? Perhaps you have already fallen or nearly fallen. Or you may have noticed that you have become more cautious when walking, climbing stairs or going outside. That fear is understandable. Falling can have many consequences. Being afraid of falling can limit your life. You might go out less often, avoid busy places or ask someone to accompany you more often. As a result, your fitness may decline. It is therefore important to take the risk of falling seriously at an early stage.

  • Cooking and preparing meals

    Do you find that cooking takes more effort than it used to? Perhaps you can still manage it, but you’re exhausted afterwards. Or you’re increasingly opting for ready meals. Because chopping, lifting, standing and tidying up take up too much energy. That can be frustrating, especially if you want to look after yourself or others properly. Cooking is not just about making a meal. It requires organisation, planning, movement and energy. You have to decide what you’re going to eat. Then you have to gather the ingredients, chop them, cook them, keep an eye on them and then tidy up. If just one of those steps becomes difficult, cooking can quickly feel like a huge chore.
