Having trouble doing the washing

Have you noticed that doing the washing is taking more and more energy? Perhaps you can still manage the washing itself. But lifting, hanging up, folding and tidying away may be too much. Or the washing is left lying around, so it just keeps piling up. This can cause anxiety and sometimes even feelings of shame. Doing the washing involves many small steps: collecting the laundry, sorting it, putting it in the machine, taking it out, hanging it up or drying it, folding it and putting it away. If you’re in pain, get tired quickly or find it harder to keep track of things, this task may feel more daunting than others might realise.

Having trouble doing the washing
What do you notice?

Difficulties with doing the laundry can arise at various times. Lifting, bending over and repetitive movements in particular often make the task strenuous.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • lifting laundry baskets is too heavy;
  • Bending down to the washing machine hurts;
  • Hanging up wet washing takes a lot of effort;
  • standing for long periods whilst folding is tiring;
  • you forgot to take the washing out of the machine;
  • clean laundry is left lying around;
  • you are finding it difficult to keep track of things;
  • you are dreading doing the washing;
  • the washing is piling up quickly.

Sometimes you try to get all the washing done in one go. That may help temporarily, but it can also cause more pain or tiredness afterwards.

What might be the reason for this?

  • Adapting the home to accommodate health issues

    Have you noticed that your home no longer meets your needs? Perhaps the stairs have become a struggle, the bathroom feels unsafe, or thresholds and narrow passageways are causing difficulties. This can make you feel insecure. Your home should, in fact, be a place where you can move about freely and safely. Home adaptations do not always have to be major. Sometimes it is just a small change, such as better lighting, a handrail or a different layout. Sometimes more is needed. The most important thing is that your home suits your daily life and the things you want to continue doing yourself.

  • Afraid of falling

Was this information helpful?

Doing the washing requires strength, balance, planning and repetition. Aches and pains in the back, shoulders, hands, knees or feet can make this task more difficult. Fatigue or shortness of breath can also mean that you are unable to stand or lift for as long.

In addition, the location of the washing machine can have an impact. A machine positioned low to the ground, carrying a full laundry basket up the stairs or having limited space to manoeuvre can make doing the washing more difficult.

Organisation also plays a part. If you have a lot of washing but no set routine, it can be difficult to keep up with the washing.

What can you do yourself?

You can make doing the washing easier by breaking the task down into smaller parts and avoiding unnecessary lifting.

For example, you could:

  • do smaller loads of washing;
  • use a lightweight laundry basket;
  • place it at hip height if possible;
  • folding whilst seated;
  • to establish a fixed laundry day or laundry routine;
  • ask for help with heavy items such as bed linen;
  • was to sort directly by person or by room;
  • Spread out the hanging and folding tasks throughout the day.

Also consider the route you take when doing the washing. Carrying less and taking fewer flights of stairs can save a lot of energy.

When is it advisable to seek help?

It is wise to seek help if your washing often piles up. Or if you experience pain when lifting, bending down or hanging it up. It is also a good idea to seek advice if doing the washing causes you stress or if you do not have clean clothes or bed linen in time.

Be sure to ask for help if you need to carry laundry baskets up or down the stairs and feel that this is unsafe. A fall whilst carrying a full laundry basket can have serious consequences.

How Rondom can help

Together, we’ll look at which steps in the washing-up process are difficult. Sometimes the solution lies in a tool or a different approach. Sometimes it’s mainly a matter of managing your energy or arranging help at the right times.

A occupational therapist can work with you to look at the layout of your home, your laundry routine and safe ways to carry out tasks. If you experience pain, balance problems or reduced strength, a physiotherapist help. If fatigue or scheduling plays a major role, then lifestyle-oriented support should be appropriate.

We are looking for an approach that makes it easier to keep on top of the laundry without putting too much strain on you.

Are you worried about falling? Perhaps you have already fallen or nearly fallen. Or you may have noticed that you have become more cautious when walking, climbing stairs or going outside. That fear is understandable. Falling can have many consequences. Being afraid of falling can limit your life. You might go out less often, avoid busy places or ask someone to accompany you more often. As a result, your fitness may decline. It is therefore important to take the risk of falling seriously at an early stage.

  • Cooking and preparing meals

    Do you find that cooking takes more effort than it used to? Perhaps you can still manage it, but you’re exhausted afterwards. Or you’re increasingly opting for ready meals. Because chopping, lifting, standing and tidying up take up too much energy. That can be frustrating, especially if you want to look after yourself or others properly. Cooking is not just about making a meal. It requires organisation, planning, movement and energy. You have to decide what you’re going to eat. Then you have to gather the ingredients, chop them, cook them, keep an eye on them and then tidy up. If just one of those steps becomes difficult, cooking can quickly feel like a huge chore.
