Overweight

Are you overweight and would you like to do something about it? Perhaps you’ve noticed it affecting your energy levels, your fitness, your clothes or your health. Or perhaps your GP has suggested that your weight could affect your risk of developing health problems. This can be a difficult realisation. It is important that this is discussed without judgement. Being overweight is usually not caused by a single choice. It is linked to habits, environment, stress, sleep, exercise, health and, sometimes, medication or genetic predisposition. That is why it requires a comprehensive approach – not a strict one, but a realistic one.

What do you notice?

Being overweight can have various effects. Sometimes these are mainly physical. Sometimes they are also emotional.

You may, for example, notice that:

  • moving becomes more difficult;
  • you get out of breath more quickly;
  • you experience pain in your feet, knees, hips or back;
  • you have little energy;
  • if you feel insecure about your body;
  • you find your clothes less comfortable to wear;
  • food you eat when feeling stressed or emotional;
  • I keep failing to lose weight time and time again;
  • you find other people’s comments annoying.

Perhaps you feel ashamed of your excess weight. That shame can make it harder to ask for help.

What might be the reason for this?

You can become overweight if, over a prolonged period, you consume more energy than you burn. But that is not the whole story. Sleep, stress, emotions, hormones, age, medication, pain and a lack of exercise can all play a part.

The environment, too, does not always make it easy to make healthy choices. Food is available everywhere, much work involves sitting down, and leisure activities often take place in front of a screen.

In addition, previous attempts at dieting may play a part. Losing weight drastically and then regaining it can lead to disappointment and a loss of confidence.

What can you do yourself?

It helps to start with habits that you can stick to.

For example, you could:

  • stick to fixed mealtimes;
  • eating more vegetables, fruit and wholemeal products;
  • drinking water instead of sweet drinks;
  • eat smaller portions;
  • snack less often;
  • daily exercise at your own level;
  • taking sleep and stress seriously;
  • seek support from someone close to you.

Don’t focus solely on weight. More energy, less pain, better sleep and easier movement are also important improvements.

When is it advisable to seek help?

It is wise to seek help if being overweight is affecting your health or day-to-day functioning. It is also a good idea to seek advice if you keep failing to lose weight, experience binge eating or feel a great deal of shame.

Please contact your GP if you are overweight and also have high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnoea, heart problems or other medical conditions.

  • Alcohol consumption

    Are you wondering whether you’d like to drink less alcohol? Perhaps you drink more often than you intended. Or you’ve noticed that alcohol has become a regular way to unwind after a busy day. Many people drink out of habit, for social reasons or to cope with stress. Yet alcohol can affect your sleep, energy levels, mood and health. Drinking less doesn’t have to start with a big decision. Sometimes it helps simply to take an honest look at when you drink, why you drink and what you get out of it. Without judgement. The aim isn’t to criticise yourself, but to gain more control.

  • Building up fitness

    Would you like to build up your fitness, but aren’t quite sure how to start? Perhaps you get tired more quickly than you used to, find yourself out of breath when climbing stairs, or feel unsteady after a period of inactivity. It can be frustrating when your body no longer performs as it used to. Building up your fitness takes time. It’s not about doing as much as possible as quickly as possible, but about exercising regularly at a level that suits your capacity. Starting too intensely can lead to discomfort or a relapse. Staying too cautious can mean your fitness doesn’t improve. The trick is to build it up gradually.

  • Dietary pattern

    Would you like to eat more healthily, but aren’t quite sure where to start? Perhaps you’ve read so much conflicting advice that you’ve actually lost your way. Or maybe you do know what’s healthy, but you can’t seem to stick to it during your busy week. A healthy diet doesn’t have to be perfect. Above all, it needs to fit in with your life. Diet affects your energy levels, weight, recovery, blood pressure, cholesterol and how you feel. Yet eating healthily isn’t just about knowledge. It’s also about planning, shopping, habits, taste, emotions and time.
