A wart is a thickening of the skin. This thickening is caused by a virus. On the sole of the foot, a wart often grows inwards, as pressure is exerted on it whilst standing and walking.

A plantar wart may resemble callus or a corn. Sometimes small dark spots are visible within the wart.

Warts are caused by a virus that can enter the body through small breaks in the skin. The virus spreads more easily in warm and damp environments.

Possible causes include:

walking barefoot in public showers or swimming pools;
minor cuts or grazes on the skin;
wet feet;
lower resistance.

Not every plantar wart causes pain. Symptoms mainly arise when the wart is situated on a pressure point.

You may notice that:

you feel pain when standing or walking;
the area feels rough or hard to the touch;
calluses form around the wart;
if the wart gets bigger or if several warts appear;
otherwise you’ll have to walk around to relieve the pressure on that spot.

Getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet and looking after your skin can help keep your feet healthy. Keeping your feet dry, wearing flip-flops in public showers and preventing minor cuts can also reduce the risk of infection.

You do not always need to treat a wart. If you are in a lot of pain, or if you are unsure whether it is actually a wart, have the spot examined.

You can:

cover the wart if it is painful;
wearing flip-flops in public showers and swimming pools;
keep your feet properly dry;
do not cut into or pick at the wart;
ask for advice on treatment with salicylic acid or cryotherapy.

Treatment may consist of:

removing excess calloused skin around the wart;
temporary pressure relief with felt;
shoe advice;
podiatry insoles for long-term pressure-related complaints;
coordination with the GP when treating with nitrogen or medication.

We do not always remove the cause of the wart straight away. However, we can often reduce the pressure and pain.

Good shoes help to reduce pressure and friction on the foot. When buying new shoes, bear the following in mind:

Always try on both shoes;
Check that there are no stiff seams or stitching in the shoe;
Choose the correct length and width of the shoe;
Choose a sturdy sole to reduce the pressure under the foot.
