Postural changes and reduced joint mobility
A process occurring within the bodies of diabetes patients can lead to stiffening or thickening of the joint capsules.
What is it?
A process occurring within the bodies of diabetes patients can lead to stiffening or thickening of the joint capsules, which may alter the position of the joints and reduce joint mobility.
It is particularly painful in, for example, the big toe joint or the ankle, but there are usually no symptoms.
A treatment
The treatment involves improving the way the foot rolls to prevent problems; this can be achieved through podiatric insoles and/or an orthosis, as well as by providing advice on footwear. Sometimes a roll-off bar is required inside the shoe; in such cases, the patient is referred to an orthopaedic shoemaker.
The expected outcome depends on the severity of the condition. The stiffening or thickening of a joint capsule is irreversible, but scar formation or other problems elsewhere can be prevented. Affected joints can be (partially) relieved of pressure.
