Bursitis of the Achilles tendon
You may notice that the back of your heel is becoming tender, swollen or red. Shoes that press against the heel can be particularly uncomfortable. This can make walking, exercising or standing up after a period of rest painful.
There is a bursa between the Achilles tendon and the heel bone. This is a small sac filled with fluid that helps to reduce pressure and friction. When this bursa becomes irritated, bursitis (subcutaneous calcaneal bursitis) may develop.

What is it?
A bursa is a small sac filled with fluid. It helps to reduce friction between tendons, bones and skin. There are several bursae around the Achilles tendon and the back of the heel bone.
If a bursa becomes irritated, it can become swollen, painful and red. This is known as bursitis.
