Tendonitis on the outside of the ankle
You may notice that the outside of your ankle becomes sensitive or painful whilst walking, exercising or moving. Sometimes the ankle feels less stable, or you may find that certain movements cause discomfort.
On the outside of the ankle are tendons that help to keep the ankle stable. If these tendons are subjected to prolonged or excessive strain, they can become irritated. This can lead to pain, swelling or a pulling sensation.

What is it?
The tendons run along the outside of the ankle. These tendons run behind the outer ankle and help to stabilise the foot and ankle.
If these tendons become overloaded, tendon irritation occurs. This is sometimes referred to as tendonitis. The condition may develop gradually or begin following an ankle sprain.
