Detachment of the nail plate (onycholysis)
The separation of the nail plate is also known as onycholysis; this can affect part of the nail or the entire nail. It is often the result of prolonged exposure to water and wound cleansing agents. The detached part often turns white or yellow.
The nail bed, in particular, is painful and sensitive.
The treatment involves monitoring the ingrown nail for 4 to 6 months.
The expected outcome is good. However, you should bear in mind that the nail lifting will (usually) not resolve itself due to damage to the nail bed.
