Ankle instability
Ankle instability
An important function of the ankle
The ankle plays a key role in stabilising the body and transferring forces from the foot to the rest of the body. It consists of several joints and has many muscles and ligaments that are responsible for these tasks. However, if the ligaments lack sufficient strength or the muscles are weak, instability can quickly arise, which can affect the dynamics of the foot and the body.
Where is your pain?
If you suffer from pain or frequently twist your ankle, it is advisable to see a podiatrist. The pain can be localised in a wide variety of places. In addition, you may experience pain whilst walking, tire quickly when walking, or frequently twist your ankle.
A treatment
The treatment involves addressing the underlying cause; in most cases, corrective podiatric insoles are fitted. In addition, exercises to strengthen the foot muscles are prescribed, possibly in combination with exercise therapy.
The result
Good, symptom-free. The therapy often needs to be continued indefinitely. In children, wearing the insoles can sometimes be phased out after a period of training the foot muscles.
